Feeding Aquarium Fish

A good understanding of the needs of your fish is important. When an aquarium is well prepared, it requires little attention—if you care to go on a vacation for a week or so there is no danger of leaving the fish behind without food; they can get along on the microscopic bodies that are to be found in every aquarium. Therefore, you should by no means dump a whole week's supply of food into the fish tank and imagine that the fish will eat only as much as they need and leave the rest for the next day. Fish do not know how to ration their food; their code of survival is "catch as catch can," and they eat all that they find. Even if they did leave some over, the food would get stale and contaminate the water. Many more fish die from overfeeding than from underfeeding, so you must be very careful.

The best rule to remember is: Feed your adult fish once a day and only as much as they can consume in five minutes. As well as the quantity, the regularity of feeding is important for the health of your fish,

There is quite a selection of food that is offered by many concerns. A rotation of three or four standard foods, using a different kind every four days, is successful. The live food that is prevalent in the fish's natural environment is also necessary as a part of their ration for a high standard of health.
