Guppy Fish Care
The proper temperature for the guppy is about 75°F., though it may run as low as 65°F. and as high as 80°F. without doing any serious damage. Extreme temperatures are tolerable to the guppy only as long as there are not large fluctuations over a short period of time; that is, do not let the temperature drop more than a few degrees per hour. The optimum temperature for breeding the guppy is 75°F. This temperature may be maintained by the use of the thermostatic heater.
There is no narrow selection of food that guppies will eat, but they are vegetarians to some degree and like fresh greens. The best thing to do for this green appetite is to give them some finely chopped lettuce. If there are plenty of green plants in the aquarium there is nothing to worry about, as they will take their own as they need it. These green plants grow so quickly that they do not miss a little nibble here or there. Guppies also eat the standard dried fish foods.
The ordinary freeze-dried tropical fish foods are best and will keep your fish healthy and active. Along with a variety of these prepared foods, the guppies should be offered some live food, too; any type is suitable as long as it is not too large. A little fresh meat chopped into fine particles will act as a fair substitute for live food when the latter is not available.
