Rasboras
The genus Rasbora contains many lovely, gentle fishes. One of the most popular of all the rasboras is the harlequin, Rasbora heteromorpha. This lovely fish is very difficult to induce to spawn and, unless you like challenges, you'd better start on other species like Rasbora trilineata. Though that species is difficult to spawn, it is not impossible. The fish usually lay their eggs on the underside of stiff broad-leaved plants. The plants of the genus Cryptocoune suit them fine. These Cryptocoryne plants, by the way, are excellent for your aquarium and they abound in the same streams in which most Rasbora are found. As a group, Rasbora species eat freeze-dried foods, flake foods, and just about every aquarium food small enough to be ingested. They really become most colorful when fed small live foods like brine shrimp and daphnia, so offer these whenever they are available from your local pet shop.
Sexing most rasboras is difficult, but mature fishes can easily be sexed by their size. Males are usually much more slender than the females which are filled with roe. Your pet shop will advise you about sex differences (if they are very good aquarium fish people).
