Female Brown Trout

The female of the brown trout has a shorter head than the male and her lower jaw is not curved. During spawning one female is sometimes accompanied by several males. The fertilized eggs are covered with sand and gravel by the female. The trout embryo has a large yolk sac, which is absorbed during the first days of its life. Only then does the fish start to catch its own food, such as insect larvae, young freshwater shrimp, crustaceans, etc.

The economic value of the trout in terms of freshwater fish management is very great indeed. It is one of the most numerous and as such a favourite prey of anglers fishing in mountainous and submountainous waters. In any event, catching brown trout with artificial flies or lures is one of the most exciting experiences for anglers. Experiments in the artificial. propagation of the trout have been carried on for centuries. Today many European countries have their own hatcheries, which are the only guarantee that streams will be well stocked with this beautiful fish. The brown trout has also been introduced into cold ponds and even in the warmer waters of open carp ponds, where they grow at a relatively fast rate and are caught in nets.
